Description
Dr. Wise received post-graduate residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX in Pediatrics, and Neurology (child), followed by a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology (emphasis on sleep). He is board-certified in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology with special qualifications in child neurology, and special qualifications in sleep medicine. After 15 years in full time academics, Dr. Wise pursued the full time practice of sleep medicine in a large, AASM accredited sleep center in Memphis, TN. On a daily basis Dr. Wise evaluates children, adolescents and adults with the full range of sleep problems and disorders. He is involved with supervision and interpretation of polysomnography (sleep studies), Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT), and integration of these findings with the clinical history in order to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan. Because of the population served in Memphis, Dr. Wise evaluates a large number of pilots (FedEx world hub), air traffic controllers, commercial drivers and barge pilots, rail engineers, and shift workers. He is experienced in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy and other disorders of excessive sleepiness, insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias. He employs the full range of treatment modalities for OSA including CPAP and non-CPAP options such as oral appliances, as well as pharmacological treatment of sleep disorders using evidence-based approaches. Because of his background in neurology, Dr. Wise evaluates and manages a significant number of patients with the co-occurrence of neurological and sleep disorders such as traumatic brain injury, seizures, intellectual disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and neurodevelopmental disorders such as Down syndrome. His experience serving in a variety of capacities with the AASM (see CV for full listing) and participating in development of evidence based practice guidelines allows him to be fully versed in standard of care issues, evaluation of potential impact of sleepiness on safety or performance, and circadian rhythm sleep issues. With respect to medico-legal consultation, Dr. Wise has reviewed a wide variety of cases involving both neurology and sleep medicine for greater than 20 years including report generation, testimony at deposition and at trial. He is knowledgeable regarding the legal concepts of standard of care, causation, damages, life expectancy and life care planning, and he has testified for both plaintiff and defense.
