Gary spent his entire career with insurance carriers, and after retirement has been active as a consultant. All job roles included underwriting as part of or total responsibility. He began his career as an umbrella underwriting trainee and completed a formal underwriting training program as well as additional course work at The College of insurance. After joining Royal Insurance, he served in Home Office Commercial Liability staff roles and held various management positions of increasing responsibility ranging from Branch Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager to Executive Vice President of a newly formed Property/Casualty Risk Management Division, responsible for large regional and national domestic U.S. and multinational clients. Following his 32 year career at Royal, Gary became the President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. operation of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group.
His broad range of expertise was gained through continuous involvement over the course of his career in increasingly complex coverage and program designs for domestic and multinational business. Development and effective management of these business segments required effective multifunctional teamwork including underwriting, actuarial, financial, legal, reinsurance, claims management, risk engineering, and client services. These functions were integrated into the Risk Management & Global Division at Royal and were part of his overall responsibilities at Mitsui Sumitomo.
Gary's operational knowledge developed from both home office and field management experience in conjunction with a deep understanding of coverage and underwriting practices offers a unique perspective as a consultant and expert witness.
